Wednesday is Backwards Day

At least it was at my school. Or maybe it was Calvin’s school.

Imagine a backward world where

  • You watch a Star Wars trilogy with the Imperials having an American accent and the Rebels having an English accent.
  • You play Nintendo games with the remote in your left hand and the nunchuk in your right.
  • You use a language where you compose functions instead of chaining objects.

In Star Wars, they did give the Imperials American accents while the Rebels had English accents!

???

Can you link to a youtube clip for proof?

[Note: Yesterday was backwards day, so don't be surprised if everything is different today.]

Heh, I knew you'd force me to do the research, ya bum.

To hear a rebel with an English accent, I present to you Obi Wan Kinobi.

Fast foward to 4:43 or just watch the whole thing for a fun fight scene.

(btw, your blog doesn't want to let me make that a real link..)

It's tempting to point to 3PO as another example, but I suppose I won't.

As for the American Imperials, I present a scene from the beginning of Episode 4. Two actually.

The first is at 5:03, a Storm Trooper.
The second is at 6:25, a general.

Finally, I present to you Darth Vader himself. As Anakin in Episodes 2 and 3, he had an English accent. Immediately upon becoming Darth Vader at the end, and throughout Episodes 4 through 6, he suddenly became James Earl Jones.

I rest my case.

Hmf. I guess I should check my facts. Those Imperials were classic Standard American.

OR MAYBE THE UNIVERSE BROKE ON WEDNESDAY AND IT'S STILL BACKWARDS DAY!

James Earl Jones doesn't really count as evidence because he speaks an R-less dialect of American English when voice acting as Vader. It's close enough to fool some of the people some of the time. Just not when immediately juxtaposed with Whiny Future Vader.

Aside: For a long time, I thought that the Anakin Skywalker actor also played Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2. (He doesn't.) The difference is that Kojima *meant* to tear down the ideal conception of his hero and Lucas didn't. He just made Future Vader whiny by mistake.
